Can I receive broadcasts on the WorldSpace system from anywhere?
To receive the WorldSpace service you must be located within one of the three broadcast beams of a WorldSpace satellite. As WorldSpace is a satellite-based system, the antenna must be in line-of-sight with the satellite to receive the signal. Therefore, each receiver comes with a detachable antenna and extension cable, which allows the user to place the antenna in a position for optimal reception. Accessories (such as a Yagi antenna, and a 25-meter extension cable, low noise amplifiers, interference filters, data port interface, etc.) are available for use in buildings or areas where accessing line-of-sight may require external placement of the antenna.

What Customer Support channels has WorldSpace put in place for the receiver?
Each WorldSpace receiver comes with a warranty from the manufacturer. In addition, WorldSpace maintains a dedicated customer service hotline in each of the countries in which we do business to assist with your receiver questions. We also have trained installation partners to assist those who may opt for professional installation of the service.

In April 2001, the WorldSpace Global Club was introduced to our listeners. This membership club provides listeners with the opportunity to learn more about new developments at WorldSpace concerning its technology, product innovations, content and programming. Communications are dispatched to our members via: (a) a quarterly newsletter distributed in January, April, July and October and (b) periodic announcements through email. WorldSpace Global Club members also have an opportunity to provide feedback and suggestions via a dedicated email address. To learn more contact globalclub@worldspace.com.

What Accessories will come with each receiver?
It could vary from one manufacturer to another. The typical list is as follows:

a) Standard:

  • Patch Antenna
  • 5 meter cable
  • Operation Manual

b) Optional

  • PC Adapter
  • Yagi Antenna and LNA
  • 25 meter cable

What about headphones or amplifiers?
Each receiver has a headphone jack that can be used with currently available earphones for privacy. Also, each receiver has a lineout jack so it can be connected to an amplifier.

Can I connect it to my stereo system?
Yes. Each receiver has a line-out jack that can be hooked up to an amplifier and connected to your stereo system’s speakers.

Can I receive the WorldSpace signal in my city/country?
You may look at the WorldSpace coverage area or contact your local WorldSpace retailer or WorldSpace office for information.

What is the purpose of the interference filter and/or booster unit (LNA)?
In many places where WorldSpace provides service, various terrestrial communications systems use nearby frequencies of the WorldSpace satellites. The interference filter can eliminate interference from these terrestrial systems and ensure that listeners continue to hear crystal-clear, digital-quality information and entertainment via WorldSpace.

The 2.3V or 15V LNA (Low Noise Amplifier) is an accessory that works in conjunction with the Yagi antenna, to amplify the satellite signal. The amplifier enables even those listeners far beyond the primary coverage area to enjoy the crystal clear quality of WorldSpace service.

Why are the receivers so expensive? Can I get one at a more reasonable price?
For the technology and the value that they provide, the WorldSpace receivers are a good buy. Our initial line of receivers (JVC, Hitachi, Panasonic, and Sanyo) range between US$125-250 depending on where you make your purchase. Increased market penetration will drive receiver prices down. We can already see these trends occurring as is common with most consumer electronic products available today.

Is there a solution for interference from mobile phone towers where there is a break in audio?
At times, reports of audio breaks have been received from locations within our service areas. We have verified that it is neither due to the satellite nor the facility that places the music on the satellite. We also understand that other satellite-based services have occasional dropouts. This is due to external factors like solar activity, which are unpredictable and transient in nature. If, in the future, you observe any unusual phenomenon, please bring it to our attention at any of these customer service centers. Your input will be most valuable and your involvement is greatly appreciated. We are committed to giving you the best quality and variety of programming 24 hours a day.

Can I listen to WorldSpace on ships/boats at sea?
Yes, you can listen to WorldSpace on ships/boats at sea. However, depending upon where you are located and the extent to which your ship/boat shifts direction, you may need to reorient the receiver’s antenna periodically to insure you maintain a line-of- sight to the satellite.
