Programming FAQ

Can you give me information on the subscription channels such as costs and the mode of payment?
WorldSpace offers both basic and premium audio services. We are expanding these premium services (which may include some of the WorldSpace music channels) to offer you an unique listening experience. The cost of these premium channels is determined beam-by-beam on a region-by-region basis and is generally billed to the customer on a pre-paid basis.
How many channels are there in the service?
The number of channels you will receive depends on which satellite you are accessing and which beam(s) of the satellite covers your location. Depending on these factors, you will be able to access between 20 to 40 broadcast channels. However, if you are located in a region in which two of our beams overlap, you will be able to get both beams’ offerings. Please check our Web site for channel listings in your area.
Are you planning to print a programme guide/schedule information?
Programming guides for all WorldSpace audio programming are available on our Web site, see program guides . Please check directly with our broadcast partners for their programme schedules.
Will one be able to listen to programs on all satellites? In other words, will there be satellite cross-coverage?
No, there is no satellite cross-coverage. There are a few regions where it is possible to receive the broadcasts from two satellites and from two different antennas. However, our international broadcast partners and most WorldSpace format channels air on all satellites.
I have not been able to receive a particular broadcast. Can you tell me why
A. Reception Problem
Please make sure that your receiver antenna is placed facing the sky in the direction of the satellite. Please make sure there are no obstructions (buildings, trees, etc.) blocking direct line-of-sight. See the trouble-shooting guide in your receiver manual.
OR
B. Receiver Problem
Please check all cable connections and insure the receiver is plugged into a wall jack and/or that the batteries are strong and positioned properly. Also make sure you are located within the coverage area of the satellite and that you are tuned to the frequency listed on our Web site. If you are still having trouble receiving a signal, please bring your receiver to an authorized WorldSpace retailer for service.
Why are there signal breaks in the broadcasts?
A. WorldSpace Satellites
Occasions on rare maintenance of WorldSpace satellites will require short periods of broadcast interruption. We will do our best to notify our listeners before these disruptions occur.
B. Third-Party Satellites
In many cases, WorldSpace obtains broadcast programming directly from our broadcast partners’ satellites. Satellite-to-satellite transmissions can cause disruptions beyond WorldSpace’s control. Furthermore, anomalies in the environment can cause satellite transmission disruptions as with solar flares. Again, such conditions are typical of satellite technology and should be expected.
C. Listeners Located Near the Equator
A phenomenon called "ionospheric scintillation" is caused by small-scale variations in the ionosphere's electron density as a result of atmospheric turbulence (similar reason to why the stars twinkle).
Scintillation effects vary with solar activity and frequency and are most severe in the equatorial region after sunset through to around midnight (local time). Countries close to the equator lie within the most intense region for scintillation effects.
As to radio reception, the effects can be loss of signal as a result of deep fades, loss of information or signal lock.
You can learn more about this natural phenomenon by viewing the following Web page http://www.nwra-az.com/ionoscint/sp_main.html.
